In fact, sexual energy follows very much the same cycle as we have described earlier in this book. From 12 to 3 is the phase of flirting: feeling and then tickling the faintest subtle impulses of attraction. As with the Brilliance Cycle, these subtle impulses of faintly perceived sexual energy can be ignored, sublimated, or suppressed, or they can be acted upon. As we move from 3 to 6, it begins with foreplay: kissing, touching, and caressing. As the energy builds, just like with the Brilliance Cycle, it becomes more focused and goal-oriented. The more we move around the cycle to 6, the closer we come to a moment of peak orgasm, and release. From 6 to 9 is the period of post-coital resting, and the clichéd reflective question, “How was it for you, babe?” For a man, the energy drops at this phase of the sexual cycle, and he may fall asleep. It is also frequently a time when people reflect upon their sexual performance. From 9 to 12 is a period of sexual rejuvenation. It may involve not thinking or desiring sex for a little while, so that a new wave of arousal can build.

Not Unisex

Almost all of the other practices referred to in this book will be very much the same for both men and women. But when it comes to the conscious cultivation of sexual energy, obviously there are different body parts, hormones, and subjective experiences involved. At 12, the spaciousness and silence is neither masculine nor feminine. The fine creative impulses that arise between 12 and 3 are also exactly the same for men and women, not gender-specific. Sex is a powerful way to bring us down into the body, and as we move down into 6, into embodiment and action, everything becomes very different in the expression of masculine and feminine energy. Therefore we are going to examine sexual practices separately for the male and female body.
